Club Mexicana And Thunderbirds at Dinerama | Great Eastern Street, EC2A
Is there a better way to spend a Friday evening, than by sharing a bottle of wine with a very good friend, devouring copious amounts of food and washing it all down with more wine? I didn't think so.
And that is why I found myself at Street Feast's Shoreditch-based Food Market, Dinerama last Friday.
Round 1 consisted of 5 'Chipuffalo' wings from Thunderbirds and the Cajun Spiced Fries with' Awesome Sauce' for me. The Chipuffalo wings are coated in buffalo sauce, chipotle and coriander. All served with a truffled blue cheese dip and pickled celery. The wings were good with a crispy coating and tangy a' la Frank's Hot Sauce. Wings were well coated and they took what felt like 2 minutes to appear in front of me which is always a plus where chicken and I are involved.
The blue cheese sauce was bloody delicious but I was hard pressed to taste any truffle in the mixture.
The fries were...chips with a yummy cajun style seasoning on them. They were also slathered in 'awesome sauce'. WTF is awesome sauce I hear you ask? Some sort of cayenne, tangy mayonnaise and very yummy.
My gorgey companion, who is vegetarian, had read about Club Mexicana on The Web and was excited to try one of their vegan tacos - in fact, you might want to check out her Instagram account focused on all things Veggie and Wellness here: Fit Food London.
The tacos were quite difficult to eat and I don't think that either of us will be ordering them again. However, the big surprise of the evening came in the form of Club Mexicana's 'Beer Battered Cheeze Fries'. What is Cheeze? My thoughts exactly. Though I can confirm that it is some sort of magical, delicious, melty Vegan Cheese substitute. And I am a MASSIVE fan of cheese (the dairy kind, in spite of my lactose-intolerance which I choose to ignore). But, I kid you not when I say that I would not have been able to tell the difference between this and some other form of real, battered cheese. I was dumb-struck. Not bad for something made from CASHEW NUTS! Fucking Cashew Nuts! They were unreal.
After a bottle of Pietas from Winerama (I see what they did there) we were ready for Round 2 the evening, and we decided on Bao from Yum Buns!
I opted for the Pork Belly and the lovely Nish opted for the Tofu Bun. The Tofu Bun consisted of was filled with, black bean mayonnaise, garlic choy sum, chilli pickles and crispy, aromatic tofu. All of this served in the classic seamed rice Bao bun. Nish said it was the best thing she had eaten that evening - high praise indeed! My pork bun was filled with cucumber, spring onion, hoisin sauce and slow roasted pork belly. The pork belly everything you would hope for in a single slice - crispy on the outside and melt in the mouth on the inside. Again, this was probably my favourite thing of the evening!
Suffice to say, I will be back. There are just too many other places to try here, not to return. Plus, did I mention the pork belly bao...
Be sure to get here before 7 pm if possible, as, after that, you will be charged a cool £3 to enter and probably find it difficult to find a seat. And I am not about that life.
The damage...
Thunderbirds: £8 (£5 for 5 wings, and £3 for fries)
Club Mexicana: £12 (£7 for 2 tacos and £5 for 'cheeze' sticks of deliciousness)
Yum Buns: £7.50 for 2 buns
Total: £27.50 (not including wine)
